A Far Cry: Fresco

  • St. John's Episcopal Church 1 Roanoke Avenue Boston, MA, 02130 United States (map)

featuring Sonja Tengblad, soprano, and Bradford Gleim, baritone

Included in the collection of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is a mid-16th century Neapolitan fresco depicting singers and instrumentalists crowding through a window. At this time in Naples, the world's first conservatories of music were being founded, sparking the development of opera and propagating formal musical training throughout the western world. AFC’s “Fresco” looks through this prism, at works by revered teachers (Scarlatti and Porpora), precocious pupils (Rossini), and Berio’s Violin Duos, meant to be shared by student and master. AFC will also proudly present the winning entry from its inaugural Young Composers Competition.
